HOW DO I COPYRIGHT MY SONG?

The safest way to copyright your song is to register it with the REGISTER OF COPYRIGHTS at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C

This is a simple process:

  • Fill out an application (called a PA form)
  • Put together the ITEMS TO BE COPYRIGHTED
  • Send the application, and the items to be copyrighted to the REGISTER OF COPYRIGHTS along with a fee (as of 3/99, the fee is $20 per song).

When the PA form is returned to you, it will include a UNIQUE NUMBER documenting you and your ownership of the song AS OF THE DATE THE REGISTER OF COPYRIGHTS RECEIVED YOUR PA FORM. So, file as soon as possible!

WHERE DO I GET COPYRIGHT FORMS?

Write to:

REGISTER OF COPYRIGHTS
LIBRARY OF CONGRESS
WASHINGTON, DC. 2055

WHAT DO I SEND TO THE REGISTER OF COPYRIGHTS?

Along with the PA form and the application fee, any of the following can be sent:

Copyright Lyrics only:

A printed copy of the lyrics.

Copyright Music only:

A printed copy of the music
OR
A cassette copy of the music.
