The safest way to copyright your song is to
register it with the REGISTER OF COPYRIGHTS at the Library of Congress in
Washington, D.C
This is a simple process:
- Fill out an application (called a PA form)
- Put together the ITEMS TO BE COPYRIGHTED
- Send the application, and the items to be
copyrighted to the REGISTER OF COPYRIGHTS along with a fee (as of 3/99, the fee is $20 per
song).
When the PA form is returned to you, it will
include a UNIQUE NUMBER documenting you and your ownership of the song AS OF THE DATE THE
REGISTER OF COPYRIGHTS RECEIVED YOUR PA FORM. So, file as soon as possible!
