bullet.jpg (975 bytes)Record Managers and Booking Agents
A positive contact with a artist manager or booking agent can be a valuable way to network yourself. The Manager is usually very influential in determining what and who's material is going to be performed by an artist. Selecting a manager can be one of the more important building blocks in the success chain. The relationship that evolves takes a great deal of trust. This should never be a quick decision unless the Manager has a well known track record of proven successful relationships with the artists. Always remember that the manager works for the artist, but may make a recommendation that the artist may not agree. Here is where the elements of trust come into play. An artist may have to concede their personal desires to the decisions of the manager. Good communication is paramount and neither party should ever be apprehensive about setting up a meeting or discussing differences of opinion in decisions to be made. managers usually charge a commission on an artists or bands earnings. The rate may really fluctuate depending on the qualifications and experience of the manager. The rates may be as low as 15% up to 50%  The manager cannot survive without the artist and the artist needs the management to bring their talents to the right material and then displayed to the right people.

Bookings agents have an obvious function. Their job is to locate and negotiate a place for the artist to perform. Booking agents are usually paid a commission of about 10% of the proceeds for each event the booking agent sets up for the artist.   Occasionally the manager or management firm will also handle the booking. This is more prevalent in Management Agencies.  If you are trying to locate venues to perform, you probably will need the help of the Booking Agency. Many balk at the commission at first, but find that the commission is more than made up with the quantity of the bookings and quality of the venue. They want you to earn as much as possible which will increase their earning potential. In looking to select an agent, you may want to find an agent that books acts similar to your own. They will already be familiar with the venues that are looking for your type of act.
